How it works: Each line gets a number, a Roman numeral, or a letter, then the symbol. The default symbol is a period, so a line reads 1. Apple. A space follows the symbol unless the symbol already ends with a space. Letters run A to Z, then AA. Roman numerals use I, V, X, L, C, D, and M.
